How to punch a hole in leather
If you are sewing leather and need to know how to
punch a hole in leather then this is for
you. I have a couple of tools, demonstrated in
the video, I use to make sewing holes with. I have known
of people simply using a sharp needle or punch, meaning punch
through with an ice pick or something. It works fine, but
you need to measure the distance of each hole to be consistent.

The devices I use are chisels and are not all that expensive, but you do have to
consider how far apart you want the sewing stitch. The
chisels are made with different stitch widths. When
I first started I needed to know how to punch a hole in leather
and not have to buy a chisel. I took a fork and straightened the tines,
sharpened them with a file, and cut the shank down about half
way and that was my punch or chisel. Later I bought the
proper chisels, but that did get me by. How to
punch a hole in leather is really just your
own mind set. You will figure out a way to get the holes
punched. I have even used a nail to do the same thing,
especially with thick leather. If you are serious about
doing some leather work where you need stitch holes made for
hand stitching then I would seriously think about buying the
proper tools. It’s much easier. Keep in mind that
chisels have different widths and different number of
prongs. You want less prongs for corners. That’s why
it is advisable to buy a set. Watch the video to see the tools I
use.
