How to make a bullet belt – machine sewing the loops – My Inspired Media.
How to make a
bullet belt
Adding
bullet loops to a belt is not that hard, but if you are using
sewing machine to sew them on it may mean some sore fingers.
Even hand sewing them is not that easy. So how to make a
bullet belt is
a simple matter of measuring out the length of the loops and
where, in length, to sew them on.
How to make a bullet belt
When
I first started making leather belts with loops I wondered how to make a
bullet belt. At first I hand sewed the loops
directly onto the belt. I found that doing that caused the
belt to get marks, or scrape marks, where the edge of the bullet
rubbed as the bullets were removed or put into the loops. I
then changed to adding the loops to an existing piece of leather
and then sewing that strip onto the belt. Usually I ‘back
pad’ the belts with pig skin so the sewing marks are all
covered. I do this entirely with a sewing machine.
Basically a strip of leather, sewed on, lifts the bullets, or
cartridges, high enough that when they are pressed into the loops
they do not scrape the belt itself. I use about 1 ounce
leather for the loops and the back strip can be 2-3 ounce
leather. Learning how to make
a bullet belt is
all up to the individual and if you are just starting out with
leather experiment for yourself to see what works.
